Gaudi was an intensely Catholic celibate who, despite his austere life, created some of the most sensuous buildings ever known.

These four works, written between 1973 and 1993, fully reflect Górecki’s expressive variety. The Little Requiem for a Certain Polka, for piano and thirteen instruments, combines a wide range of moods. The Concerto-Cantata, which received its world première from the soloist on this recording, alternates a moving vein of melancholy with a charged, violent energy. The radical, energetic Harpsichord Concerto is heard here in the version for piano, performed by the composer’s daughter. The Three Dances are hugely approachable and full of exciting contrast.

"Magnetic" is the exciting new album by London based music producer / musician Gaudi, which features a choice selection of sounds from the catalogue of internationally respected experimental label RareNoiseRecords, as well as direct contributions by several top caliber musicians from the worlds of rock, jazz and electronica.
The list of artists whose sounds were initially chosen by Gaudi from the RareNoise catalogue of releases or who successively added their sounds and skills to the overall project reads like a ‘who’s who’ of musical talent and gives warranted indication as to the quality of the ingredients…

Polish composer Karol Szymanowski was touched by many of the stylistic currents that crossed Europe in the early twentieth century, but a good performance of his music is one that emphasizes the Polishness he brought to his music even as he adopted ideas from the outside. This one, part of a fine series from Naxos exploring the works of this somewhat underrated composer, is superb. Featured here are the beginning and ending works of Szymanowski's symphonic career, entirely different in character.

Listeners who have wholeheartedly embraced the fin de siecle music of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, Russian composer Alexander Scriabin, and French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel have never really responded to the fin de siecle music of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski. Who can say why? As this disc coupling the composer's Second and Third symphonies performed by Antoni Wit and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra proves, Szymanowski certainly wrote much first-rate music.

Philippe Pierlot, Ricercar Consort - Antoni Bertali: Valoroso [2004]

Antoni Bertali - Valoroso (Philippe Pierlot, Ricercar Consort) [2004]
Classical | Mirare MIR 9969 | TT: 79.12 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Covers | 433 Mb

Bertali’s life seems to embody the typical experiences that top-notch musician would expect during the seventeenth century: his playing and composing centered around court life. Bertali served under the Habsburgs of Austria. The program notes point out that, although he was mainly a composer of oratorio and opera, his instrumental works still merit attention. This point is made best by giving this disc a thorough hearing. The sonatas which make up the majority of the repertoire here are delightful miniatures. Highly sectional and often inspired by dance rhythms, these pieces sometimes feel like dance suites.
