This volume deals with philosophically grounded theories of animal generation as found in two different traditions: one, deriving primarily from Aristotelian natural philosophy and specifically from his Generation of Animals; and another, deriving from two related medical traditions, the Hippocratic and the Galenic. The book contains a classification and critique of works that touch on the history of embryology and animal generation written before 1980.

The two Haydn concertos recorded here are pillars of the cello repertoire, and unquestionably the two most accomplished works in their genre from the Viennese Classical era. As to the concerto by Matthias Georg Monn (a major figure of the transition from Baroque to Classicism), it is a remarkable work from the pre-Haydn period.

For fans of Jean-Michel Jarre, Chronologie contains more of Jarre's proven ability to blend familiar sounds in the New Music tradition into unusual, inventive compositions. The uninitiated will find Chronologie's blend of 19th Century classical musical themes with pop, rave and rap sounds downright danceable. Many of the pieces begin with a classical sound – in one song it's deeply resonating pipe organ – and almost invariably pick up the tempo quickly and slide right into a Gloria Estefan beat.

This double album brings together two recordings that broke new ground in the Beethoven discography. Disc one focuses on the transition from the violin sonata's transition from the Baroque to the Classical, and disc two explores the development of piano trio as it evolves from the Classical into the Romantic. These performances also document the sound of three outstanding period instruments (including Beethoven's own violin!) in superb performances by violinist Daniel Sepec, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and pianist Andreas Staier.
