"New Seasons is a project undertaken by oboist Albrecht Mayer to create "new" concertos for oboe, based primarily on the operas and oratorios of George Frideric Handel. He and arranger Andreas N. Tarkmann used arias, sometimes including bits of recitative, and gave the vocal lines to the oboe, flute, and bassoon without changing too much of the accompanimental parts to create a cycle of four concertos. Compared to Handel's original instrumental music, these are naturally more lyrical and sometimes more declamatory, but it is surprising how often the music is very dance-like. Lively, moving rhythms are not what is normally expected in vocal music, but it makes the arias used here very natural sounding as concerto movements…" ~AMG

Albrecht Mayer knows how to inspire. Everywhere the Franconian Masteroboist comes, he spreads good humor. Mayer is not only a brilliant soloist, he also radiates human warmth, which is immediately transmitted to his audience. When he enters the concert hall and starts to play, a magical-tense atmosphere immediately arises.

Albrecht Mayer may be principal oboist for the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic, but he is also a very active soloist and recitalist not only on the oboe, but also on its relatives, the English horn and the oboe d'amore. Oboists of his caliber are rare, and with his lush tone, smooth control, and engaging expression it's easy to understand why he is a much sought-after musician.

Although the oboe repertoire is comparatively rich, Clara Dent wanted to record a new program customized for her talents. Fascinated by the direct expression of the singing voice in opera, she asked Andreas N. Tarkmann to arrange an entire program of arias for her; the resulting album is La Prima Donna. Berlin-born Clara Dent began oboe studies at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, finishing at Munichs Hochschule für Musik. Ms. Dent has been Solo Oboist of the Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchestra Berlin since 1999, and professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Nürnberg since 2009.

Jumping from Mozart on Deutsche Grammophon to Bach on Decca, oboist Albrecht Mayer continues to explore transcriptions as well as works originally for his instrument on Voices of Bach. This is a good and necessary thing since neither Mozart nor Bach wrote a sufficient number of works for the oboe to fill out a single disc. In the case of Bach, Mayer has hit on the ingenious solution of including not just Bach's canonical Oboe Concerto, plus his concertos for oboe d'amore and English horn, but also eight arrangements of well-known chorales for chorus and oboe. This serves the dual tasks of keeping the program interesting for the listener and challenging for Mayer, and it works brilliantly. With his apparently effortless virtuoso technique and his pungent but poignant tone, Mayer turns in soulful and stylish performances of the three concertos, plus sweetly spiritualized accounts of the chorales. The English Concert, the excellent English-based Baroque period orchestra, and Trinity Baroque, a very small but quite superb chorus, support Mayer's solos with graceful but heartfelt accompaniments, and Decca captures them in clean, warm, and open digital sound.

The New Seasons referred to in the title here are the so-called American Four Seasons, the Violin Concerto No. 2 of Philip Glass, which has even less of a connection to Vivaldi's model than do Astor Piazzolla's Buenos Aires Four Seasons and other works that take Vivaldi as a point of reference. The work is in eight sections, but which ones are supposed to represent which season is left up to the listener. It's really a typical but unusually effective example of late-period Glass, with the composer's usual textures intact but lots of harmonic motion. Part of the interest here lies in hearing Latvian violinist and conductor Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica, long champions of minimalism's Baltic branch, tackle a work by one of the leaders of Western minimalism. The American Four Seasons get a treatment that's a bit rougher than usual, but then Kremer turns around (after a Pärt girls' choir interlude) and delivers pristinely smooth, glassy textures in Giya Kancheli's Ex contrario. The program closes with a fascinating little melody by Japanese rock musician and film composer Shigeru Umebayashi, a daring and effective choice.
