Albert Marcoeur, French multi-instrumentalist/composer, was born on December 12 1947, in Dijon, France. During his formal education of clarinet at the National Academy of Music and Dance of Dijon, Marcoeur actively participated in many straightforward college rock 'n roll bands. Closing an end to his formal training Marcoeur's musical visions had gravitated towards the experimental facets of music, wishing "to do nothing else but make my own music". In 1970, the realisations of Marcoeur's 'unclassifiable' forays found their conception, marking the being of studio life. It was to be another four years until the release of his first self-titled album, which still ranks as his greatest recording to date…

Akşak is the exciting encounter of two exceptional musicians from different generations: legendary drummer Jaki Liebezeit (Can, Depeche Mode, Chet Baker) and percussion wizard Holger Mertin (Drums And More). Like a zen master of the minimal, repetitive beat, Liebezeit - famous for his hypnotic precision - creates with only few sound colours the perfect matrix for Mertin’s unleashed playing on any imaginable percussion instrument. The result is a mighty, complex pulse - the groove of a better world.

At a gathering of the great minds of the world, it is decided to undertake an expedition to the North Pole. Professor Maboul (Georges Melies) invites his colleagues to his workshop and shows them a model of the means by which he intends to reach their goal: an amazing flying machine. Maboul leads the way to his factory, where construction of the airship is nearing completion. When the flying machine is ready, Maboul and some of the other savants depart, to the acclamation of the gathered crowd. Those who did not manage to secure a seat on the flying machine consider other means of reaching the pole; some leave by balloon, others by automobile – all meet a grim fate. Meanwhile, Maboul and his team fly through the heavens, encountering comets, planets and constellations. A lash of Scorpio’s tail almost causes the flying machine to crash. It recovers and reaches the Arctic, but does crash upon landing. Maboul and the others admire their surroundings, then set out to investigate one of the great mysteries of the region: the Giant Of The Ice….

The recordings by Isaac Algazi (b. İzmir / Turkey 1889, d. Montevideo / Uruguay 1950) presented here are a precious testimony to Sephardi musical traditions in the last decades of the Ottoman period. Beginning in the 1920s there was not a single Jewish home in Turkey with a gramophone that did not possess Algazi’s records, and by the late 1930s he was known throughout Turkey and beyond as ne’im zemirot Israel (Sweet Singer of Israel; an expression originally used to refer to King David). Algazi was admired not only by Jews but also by Turks – who considered him one of their greatest musicians, honoring him with the titles of Efendi and Hoca (hodja = Master).
