Among the offensive aerial missions employed in World War II, air-to-ground gun fighting was one of the most valuable. Strafing, which involved the extensive damage of ground, air and naval forces by pilots flying in deadly, low-altitude skies, helped the Allies to their victory.

This excellent book starts with a two page history of the development of the Shilka with the rest of the book consisting of well captioned pictures.
The pictures - the majority of which are B&W - start off with a few pages of pictures of the Shilka's predecessors (ZSU-57 etc) an then move on to pictures of the Shilka itself.
Photos of all major variants of the Shilka are included as well as excellent close-up pictures which cover most, if not all, of the details on the exterior and interior. There are also technical drawings of the turret and line drawings comparing the different variants. As an added bonus there are some very good photos of the 2S6 Tunguska - the Shilka's successor.

A fine history of World War II aircraft turrets and gun positions, illustrated with new photographs by Dan Patterson. Includes aircraft from all nations, including one or two rarer birds from the Luftwaffe, Italian Air Force and the Red Air Force. The diagrams and photographs in this volume enable readers to see close up the cramped, cold, exposed turrets in which so many young men fought and died during World War II. Veterans describe what it was like to fly and fight in the many different turret and gun positions.

This is a comprehensive survey covering every turret used by the British air services - from the very earliest attempts to provide air gunners with powered assistance for their weapons, via the development and mass production of wartime turrets, through to today's Lucas helicopter turret. Including American turrets fitted to US aircraft used by the RAF, this well illustrated volume is destined to become the essential 'benchmark' reference work.

The air war over occupied Europe and Nazi Germany is illustrated from the unique and dramatic point of view of gun cameras mounted on Allied aircraft. The story begins as American bombers fall prey to Nazi flak and fighters and continues through the recapture of European skies as seen from American P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts and British Spitfires. Also depicted are breathtaking images of ground strafings and crews coaxing crippled bombers into perilous belly landings.

Lt. Col. Robert (Dutch) Holland was a third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, not a pitcher. While at spring training a B-36 flew over the field and Dutch was standing on third base. Brewster was his third base replacement when he, Dutch was re-called to duty. The movie clearly depicts this.
