Appearing here in a double-trio lineup with bassist and drummer Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen going head-on with Mark Dresser and Gerry Hemingway, tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman leads the session captured on Suite for Helen F. (the "F" refers to abstract expressionist painter Helen Frankenthaler), one of the most monumental free jazz outings of recent years, a truly Mahlerian opus in seven parts lasting 107 minutes. Those familiar with earlier Perelman outings, notably on the Leo label, will be familiar with his own paintings, in which, in keeping with the kind of music he makes, pigment seethes in thick layers; colors, shapes, and textures collide; and semi-recognizable features melt into abstraction in a frenzy of creation.

Appearing with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Harry James during the late '30s and early '40s, Helen Forrest became one of the most popular swing era singers Рeven vocal authority Mel Tormé named her his favorite, male or female. Though her voice wasn't quite as clear as Doris Day's, Forrest was an excellent interpreter, and her sweet vocals proved a solid foil for the Benny Goodman band during 1940 and half of 1941. Collectors' Choice compiled her complete appearances with Goodman on three discs, though they're hardly overloaded at 55 tracks total. The package makes for a lot of great material, including her biggest hits while there, "How High the Moon" and "I Can't Love You Any More (Any More Than I Do)," the latter recorded with top swing guitarist Charlie Christian. Also featured is a previously unreleased track featuring Goodman's own competent vocal (reminiscent of Hoagy Carmichael) on "Jenny."

One thing that set Helen Merrill apart from other '50s jazz singers was her acutely dramatic vocal style. Her earnest phrasing, elongated notes, and incandescent tone might even strike the contemporary listener as qualities more appropriate for the Broadway stage than a jazz club. On 1955's Dream of You, though, Merrill found reconciliation, sounding both melodramatic and swinging within Gil Evans' darkly spacious, yet economical arrangements. Suitably, torchy ballads are prominent. On the somewhat grandiose side there's "Where Flamingos Fly" and "I'm a Fool to Want You," which find Merrill in a pensive mood amidst a variety of tempo and timbre shifts.
