A platinum-selling singer, Esther Phillips had a long and storied career and all of her recordings for KUDU (sub-label of CTI) have something nice on them, but this is probably the best one. The credits for “From A Whisper To A Scream“, Esther’s 1972 Kudu debut – considered by many to be her finest album for the label – lists such renowned players as Hank Crawford on sax, Eric Gale and Cornell Dupree on guitar, Bernard Purdie on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards and Gordon Edwards on bass. Also enlisting the cream of background singers (Joshie Armstead, Hilda Harris and Tasha Thomas) giving Esther just the right vocal cushion for her blues-tinged interpretations of works by everyone from poet/singer Gil Scott-Heron and the great Marvin Gaye to New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint and soul man Eddie Floyd.

Although he never seems to win any popularity polls, Bill Holman is among the most respected and unique arrangers of the last 40 years of the 20th century. This CD features his band of the mid-'90s, an outfit that includes many of the top Los Angeles-based musicians. Holman's writing is often colorfully overcrowded (rewarding repeated listenings) yet logical, with the charts progressing and developing from beginning to end rather than repeating the same basic ideas continuously.

Ten Light Claps and a Scream is the third and final LP by South African rock band Otis Waygood. It was released in 1971 by EMI-Parlophone, at the height of the Big Heavies' popularity - a sudden wave of white anti-Apartheid South African hard rock groups (the tag would be made official with the release of a 1972 compilation LP). Incidentally, Ten Light Claps and a Scream was produced by Julian Laxton, leader of Freedom's Children, another Big Heavy. By this third opus, Otis Waygood had developed an impressive group sound that built on the energy of bands like Free and Bloodwin Pig, adding to the wailing guitars and growling organ a bit of raspy, gnarly saxophone. The resulting sound is startlingly similar to H to He Who Am the Only One-era Van der Graaf Generator…

On "From Silence to Somewhere" Wobbler cooks an enigmatic, multi flavoured and adventurous brew in the olde black cauldron. Poignant and edgy guitar riffs, melancholic and harmonious verses, powerful crescendos, energetic spinet driven passages and the odd touch of flamenco and italian recitals. Four epic songs, clocking in at 47 minutes. Thematically spun around a wondering view on metamorphosis, change and alchymism - a bit of a continuation from the previous album “Rites at Dawn”, but slightly darker and more introspective. Musically, there’s a connection to all of the three previous albums, while at the same time making new ground. Inspiration from renaissance music and old Italian prog has seeped into the mix, as well.

Danish Melodic Progressive Metal band Section A is back after a six-year absence with a new studio album, titled Wall of Silence. It’s the band’s fourth overall, and the first Section A album not to feature vocalist Anders Engberg. His replacement is a relative newcomer named Nicklas Sonne. Drums on Wall of Silence are performed by Dennis Hansen (Fatal Force). Multi-instrumentalist Torben Enevoldsen once again handles everything else.

'Silence' is the fourth studio album of the band A.C.T, whom consists of five eager and ambitious young musicians from Sweden. With their 1999 debut album, 'Today's Report', A.C.T have won the hearts of rock fans the world over.
