Label: Rock Candy Records Ltd. (UK) | Released: 2008-12-22 (1983)

Originally released in 1983, this album was recorded in between the 2 Toto albums "IV" and "Isolation", and includes most of the Toto band members, plus almost all the best studioperformers of L.A. at the time (Tom Kelly, Billy Steinberg a.m.o). The songs are well written and powerfully recorded. The 2 best known songs are the title track "Taking A Cold Look" and "Alone". The last one was also released some years later by the band Heart, but I personally like this original version better. If you like the mid-80's AOR/Westcoast sound, this album is a MUST, and the sooner you buy it, the better - for you!

One of the forgotten classics of the late-'60s American blues scene, the Colwell-Winfield Blues Band once opened for Led Zeppelin, and that would appear to be their greatest claim to fame – until you play the group's debut album, a hulking slab of blistered fusion that packs some of the most intriguing arrangements of the age.

When folk icon Irving Steinbloom passed away, he left behind a legacy of music and a family of performers he has shepherded to folk stardom. To celebrate a life spent submerged in folk, Irving's loving son Jonathan has decided to put together a memorial concert featuring some of Steinbloom's best-loved musicians. There's Mitch and Mickey, who were the epitome of young love until their partnership was torn apart by heartbreak; classic troubadours The Folksmen, whose records were endlessly entertaining for anyone able to punch a hole in the center to play them; and The New Main Street Singers, the most meticulously color-coordinated neuftet ever to hit an amusement park. Now for one night only in New York City's Town Hall, these three groups will reunite and gather together to celebrate the music that almost made them famous.

Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton's debut for Concord (which has been reissued on CD) alerted the jazz world to the young swing stylist and predated Wynton Marsalis' first record (and the emergence of the Young Lions) by a couple years. Hamilton, who mixed together Zoot Sims and Ben Webster to form his own recognizable tone, already sounded in prime form for this set. Teamed up with trumpeter Bill Berry, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Jake Hanna, Hamilton essentially launched the revival of mainstream jazz with this record.

"A Fiery Peace in a Cold War" is probably the best history of the development of the ICBM program that's not classified. It is also an ok, but not spectacular, look at the lives of the people most specifically, Bernard Schriever who developed the program. It's probably unfair to compare this to Sheehan's best work, "A Bright Shining Lie," but the narrative bogs down in detail at times and the characters aren't as clear cut.
