Rock / 4CD Box Set / 82 songs compilation / Warner-Rhino 2004

As a sequel to 2004's similarly packaged Rhino box No Thanks!: The '70s Punk Rebellion, this four-disc set tackles the punk/indie/modern rock of the 80s with equal panache. Subtitled "Dispatches from the 80s Underground", these 82 non-chronological tracks play like a great college station from the later part of the decade…
Greg Lake - From The Underground Vol.II: Deeper Into The Mine (2003) [Columbia Music Japan, VQCD-10177] Repost

Progressive Rock, Art Rock

Like the first volume of this series, this gathers rare recordings from throughout the bulk of Greg Lake's career, spanning the late '60s to the mid-'90s. Lake might be one of the most famous musicians associated with progressive rock, but you'd have a hard time taking that impression away from this CD if it was the first or only sampling of his music you heard. Rarities collections can't serve as a fair career retrospective, of course…

My Nation Underground is the fourth solo album by Julian Cope. It produced three singles including "Charlotte Anne" (which reached number 35 in the UK charts in September 1988 and was also Cope's only song to reach any position on the US charts). The album's music is an extension of the more commercial side of Cope's songwriting, following on from the relative commercial and organisational success of its predecessor Saint Julian.

Genre: Funk, Soul, Folk, World, Country / Label: Odion Livingstone

Sweet grooves from the Duomo Sounds label – a short-lived Nigerian imprint who cut some mighty funky sounds at the start of the 80s! The title here uses the word "disco", but these cuts have none of the strings and polish of the sounds you'd hear at Studio 54 – as most numbers here are stripped-down and raw, really more in a clubbier take on the more famous Nigerian funk of a few years before! However, there's also a quality here that could easily cross over to the hipper clubs on the New York underground – as most of these guys are also using the same sort of small combo funk instrumentation of the best of the indie post-disco scene – which means that some tracks resonate with the work of labels like P&P, and others echo some of the more global currents that were showing up in New York funk during the period!

Various Artists - New York Noise: Dance Music From The New York Underground 1978-1982 (2003)
Pop/Rock, No Wave, Leftfield | EAC Rip | FLAC, Img+CUE+LOG+Scans (PNG) | 71:08 Min | 503,09 Mb
Label: Soul Jazz Records (UK) | Cat.# SJR CD77 | Released: 2003-06-30 (1978-1982)

New York Noise covers roughly the same stretch of time as In the Beginning There Was Rhythm, another compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz label. There aren't any gaping stylistic gulfs between the two discs, but the geographic focus here is completely different. In the Beginning features post-punk groups from England, while this disc highlights the genre-bending and cultural cross-breeding that was taking place in New York City, synchronously, during the late '70s and early '80s. The disc takes in most of the movements that took root in the city during the era, from no wave to mutant disco to hip-hop to art funk and a handful of points in between all without overlapping a great deal with other sets that were released just before and just after, like Downtown 81, Rough Trade Post Punk 01, N.Y. No Wave, and a swollen reissue of ZE's Mutant Disco.

EMIs massive five-disc collection of 101 80s Hits is about as budget as you can get without putting the thing together yourself at home. The 101 tracks are heavy on the U.K. hits, so for every international smash like Karma Chameleon Culture Club and Walking on Sunshine Katrina & the Waves theres a Kayleigh Marillion and a Good Heart Feargal Sharkey. That said, it's nice to hear something other than Queen's We Will Rock You, and hearing Limahl spin his Neverending Story next to Whitesnake is kind of fun, but these collections are a dime a dozen! The Human League are an English synthpop band formed in Sheffield. Dont Dream Its Over is a song by the Australian rock band Crowded House.

The 1980s might conjure up embarrassing images of bad fashion but the music was phenomenal. This era produced the most iconic bands and the most experimental music of all time; popular classics that are delivered here on this sensational album. Now the second batch of releases has been released, and here is a further collection of 80s pop to appeal to the same buyers of 80s Anthems.

UK three CD collection. This release charts the birth of synthesized pop music in the 1980s and ultimately the roots of contemporary electronic dance music. The importance and continued popularity of '80s pop is not to be underestimated, and the emergence of serious synthesized music producers in Kraftwerk, the Human League, Heaven 17, OMD, Yazoo, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Japan, Devo, Sparks, Gary Numan, New Order and the Pet Shop Boys, all of whom massively pushed the boundaries in experimenting with (mainly) Roland synths in this era, ultimately showed the way for the House and Techno producers of the '90s to the present day. Within this more serious side there was also some brilliant, pure Synthpop from the Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Thomas Dolby, Simple Minds, Propaganda, Erasure, China Crisis, Belouis Some, the Lotus Eaters, a Flock of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Blancmange and the Associates.

Genre: Documentary

A behind-the-scenes music documentary that reveals the messy, all-too human face of the low-budget music scene in stark contrast to the perceived glamour of an internationally touring rock band. Raised on a chicken farm in rural Nambour, on Australia's northeast coast, front men Geoff and Ben Corbett sought their artistic beginnings in the 80s, dabbling in punk and performance art. They milked their North Queensland roots relentlessly for its inbred, bigoted imagery, filtered through wicked wit and self-deprecation. Touring for 15 years, the band has become an underground institution. One reviewer described their show as "an indistinguishable pulverising barrage of screams, sweat, spit and blood flowing over a fierce, raw pulsing din." Their shows engender an atmosphere of trance and possession as the duo lurch around the stage, barrel into the crowd, hang upside-down from lighting rigs, drink beer from boots, eat the contents of ashtrays, and blood let. Their mild-mannered alter egos.
