Master director Federico Fellini moved into the realm of self-reflexive autobiography with Marcello Mastroianni as Fellini's alter ego Guido Anselmi, a film director who, overwhelmed by the large-scale production he has undertaken, plunges into an interior world where fantasy and memory impinge on reality. Fellini jumbles narrative logic by freely cutting from flashbacks to dream sequences to the present until it becomes impossible to pry them apart, creating both a psychological portrait of Guido's interior world and the surrealistic, circus-like exterior world that came to be known as "Felliniesque."

Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director whose new project is collapsing around him, along with his life. One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini’s 8½ (Otto e mezzo) turns one man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. An early working title for 8½ was The Beautiful Confusion, and Fellini’s masterpiece is exactly that: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act.

Midnight Blue is Kenny Burrell’s understated masterpiece and one of the finest displays of bluesy-jazz guitar playing. The guitarist whose tone entranced Jimi Hendrix and whose style was emulated by Stevie Ray Vaughan moves deliberately and patiently through this intimate set. Standouts include the smokin’ opener, “Chitlins Con Carne” and the stunning “Soul Lament.” His elegant choice of chords and melodic intensity are powerful and fluid. This star-studded affair also features tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, double-bassist Major Holley Jr., drummer Bill English and conga-player Ray Barretto. In 2005, NPR included the album in its “Basic Jazz Library,” describing the album as "one of the great jazzy blues records".

Nine tracks of the Basie band in its prime playing music composed and arranged by Quincy Jones - that should be enough to tell you this is a superb album. All nine of the originals are virtually forgotten today but are very well-played by this veteran band. Although Frank Foster was still in the band, Eric Dixon (on tenor and flute) was starting to assert himself as a major solo voice while trumpeter Snooky Young has a few strong spots.
