Brooklyn Raga Massive is a collective of musicians rooted in Indian classical music. That tradition rarely involves an ensemble larger than three or four players. Sitarist Neel Murgai identified Terry Riley's canonical minimalist composition In C—an open scored collection 53 short musical phrases that the players repeat and move through at their own pace—as an accessible way for a large number of Indian musicians to play together. This album is a live concert recording with 18 players. The instrumentation is sitar, sarod, bansuri, vocals, tabla, hammered dulcimer, oud, violin, cello, upright bass, dragon mouth trumpet, guitar, cajon, riq and frame drum.

For this compact disc, Pandit Ashok Pathak plays an Indian instrument called a surbahar, or what some will call a bass sitar. Just as saxophones have an alto, tenor, and baritone, the surbahar is a lower sounding version of a regular sitar and gives a distinctive sound. Ancient Court Raga Traditions: The Pathak Gharana is a compact disc with only two songs, each lasting 36 minutes each. Joining him on this are Priyadarshani Pathak and Sivranjani Pathak, both on tampuras. The CD was originally released in 2001, reissued in 2003.

Raga Dharmavati is a 1993 CD by violinist L. Subramaniam & tabla player Alla Rakha. The liner notes aren't sure if this is a live recording from 1983 or 1986 so let us call it "early to mid 1980's." This was released on Ravi Shankar's own label, Ravi Shankar Music Circle.
