With Blue Rock, the Cross expanded their sound from the retro '70s rock of Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know with a greater emphasis on production and synthesizers. That is not to say there are no rockers on the album. In fact, "Dirty Mind" and "Millionaire" are among their best. But songs like "New Dark Ages," "The Also Rans," and the haunting "Hand of Fools" are dominated by heavy keyboards and shimmering production…

Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy's last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album's recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early '70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy's heavy, dual-guitar attack. Black Rose also turned out to be the band's most musically varied, accomplished, and successful studio album, reaching number two on the U.K. album chart upon release…

Rare UK heavy psych hard rock with some progressive rock elements from the early 70s in the vein of Writing On The Wall or Leafhound, though not as outright brutal as those two, and with a nod to Mott The Hoople, Slade, etc. Formed from the ashes of 60s psych band Turquoise, this is classic UK early 70s rock.

Released only eight months after Queen's debut, Queen II consolidated the band's pioneering sound and continued to build momentum for the group, charting significantly higher than the first album on both sides of the Atlantic. The band even enjoyed its first hit, Seven Seas Of Rhye, a British top 10 single. Thought by many critics to have been highly underrated, Queen II has come to be considered not only one of the group's most inspired, but a classic of 70s rock included on many "best of" and essential album lists.

Keep the Faith reintroduced Bon Jovi after almost four years of side projects and hiatuses. The musical climate had shifted considerably in that time, a fact that wasn't lost on the band. Faith blatantly brought to the surface the Bruce Springsteen influence that was always lurking in Bon Jovi's sound, and used it to frame Faith's more serious interpretation of the band's pop-metal groove…

Recorded while the band was evolving slowly into the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Trying to Burn the Sun is the third and final release from Elf, the band that finally earned Ronnie James Dio the attention he had been seeking since the late '50s. After writing and recording a few singles for Blackmore, Dio and Elf were solidly moving in a heavier musical direction, no doubt influenced by Deep Purple and the British supergroup's lead guitarist. Standout cuts include "Wonderworld" and "Streetwalker," two cuts that were somehow placed at the tail end of the record, despite their strong melodies and musicianship…
