Three decades after the fact, people looking at releases like This Time by Basie would tend to dismiss it as pandering, Count Basie doing a "pops"-type outing - the cheesy cover art even emphasized the songs over Basie and his band. Nothing could be further from the truth, however - this release reveals a wonderful body of work, and deserves to be better known. For starters, This Time by Basie swings, smooth and easy but taut, or hot and heavy. From Sonny Payne's understated cymbal intro to "This Could Be the Start of Something Big" to the bluesier notes of "One Mint Julep," Basie and company sound like they're enjoying themselves, whether elegantly stretching out on "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" or "Moon River," or soaring into the air on the hotter numbers - one of the more surprising covers here is "Walk Don't Run," which even works in a big-band arrangement…

The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast is a concept album and subsequent live rock opera appearing in 1974 and 1975 respectively, based on the children's book of the same title (The album cover design is from Alan Aldridge's design for the book).
It was originally conceived as a solo vehicle for Jon Lord and to be produced by Roger Glover who had recently left Deep Purple, but Lord proved too busy with Deep Purple and Glover took up the reins on his own. Using his connections, Glover recruited a large cast of noted rock musicians to perform on it, with a different vocalist for each track including David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes…

Aside from his tremendous powers of performance, Stevie Wonder stands as one of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century, probing the joyous peaks and depressing valleys of love and relationships. The Motown tribute album Conception: An Interpretation of Stevie Wonder's Songs has its highs and lows as well; with Stevie himself in the producer's chair (along with new-era Motown exec Kedar Massenburg), the album certainly has a lot of promise. It boasts plenty of neo-soul balladeers – India.Arie, Mary J. Blige, Brian McKnight, Joe, Musiq – as well as mainstream stars like Eric Clapton and John Mellencamp, who took musical cues from classic Stevie Wonder LPs like Talking Book or Songs in the Key of Life.

Before the Beatles ushered in the beat revolution, the British pop scene reverberated to a tidal wave of home-grown instrumental music. However the golden age of the instrumental was destined to wither as quickly as it had bloomed, yet British rock owed much to its wordless past. This excellent 3 disc compilation includes tracks such as "Telstar", "F.B.I." and "Sleepwalk" and aptly plays out with At The Sign Of The Swingin Cymbal by Brian Fahey & his Orchestra, the original 1960 version of the chart rundown tune for BBC Radio s Pick Of The Pops. If you ve got that far, we guarantee you ve enjoyed 60 of the greatest instrumentals British popular music has to offer.

Now this is a totally amazing box set… Iimagine following Steve Hackett and his band of merry men as they trek thru the 70's , 80's and 90's!. This box set contains 3 of Steve's personal most memorable shows. The first 2 CD's are devoted to a complete show from 1978 at Hammersmith Odeon drawing on material from "Spectral Mornings", "Please Don't Touch", "Voyage Of The Acolyte" and even some small Genesis ditties. Overall the recording is quite sweet considering the age of the archive and was nicely preserved in its entirity, complete with all cheering and encores… basically untouched in its beautiful entirity. Next step is the dark ages of the 80's with an absolute ripper of an evening in Rome Italy.
