This series started out in 1990 as Super Hits, with each issue having a cartoonish photo/drawing as cover art. There were 20 volumes in the original Super Hits series. In 1995, the series was renamed AM Gold. The first four volumes were reissued using the new series title and a modified version of the cover art work from SUD-05, but that was soon replaced with a second AM Gold cover design that featured a gold record. The Super Hits series used the SUD- prefix, while the AM Gold series used the AM1- prefix. In the late 1990s, the AM1- prefix was replaced with the R834- prefix, but the volumes continued as before. Two AM Gold budget box sets were introduced in the late 1990s, with 12 tracks instead of the usual 18-24. These were meant for retail sales, unlike the normal subscription CDs.

THE ONE AM RADIO is a band from New England by way of Los Angeles who make dreamy synth-pop songs about the feeling of being alone at night in a car on a street in a city that never really seems like home, and other modern problems. `Heaven Is Attached by a Slender Thread' was recorded over months of late nights in an apartment in Los Angeles, then mixed by Grammynominated producer Tony Hoffer. The result is a dance record for introverts, the soundtrack to getting lost in a city. Full of irresistibly catchy pop hooks, melancholy lyrics, and pulsing electronics, `Heaven Is Attached by a Slender Thread' promises to be the feel-good bummer of the year.

Much more than the usual greatest-hits package, Collection is a well-thought-out compilation of the very best tracks of Edgar Winter's career. Obviously, his radio hits are here. "Frankenstein," "Free Ride," and "Hangin' Around" were all staples of mid-'70s AM radio. But Rhino Records doesn't kick this set off with any of the "hits," choosing to rock things up with a track from Edgar Winter's White Trash, "Give It Everything You've Got," before moving into the mellow blues of "Easy Street," highlighted by Winter's jazzy saxophone work. Also included are the excellent antiwar ballad "Dying to Live" and the melodic and catchy "Diamond Eyes" and "Round and Around." All in all, this is a definitive buffet of Winter, but don't let that stop you from sampling the original platters.

M. Ward's latest is a rough-cut Americana diamond, one crafted not simply from folk and bluegrass but also 50s AM radio, the saloon cabaret of studio-era Hollywood, and good old-fashioned indie rock. It's artists like M. Ward who make me contemplate why I write about music. I get my skin tingling to the acoustic guitars and I'm just thinking "Jesus, is this what it's about?" I'm trying to put the feeling this music gives me into words in an attempt to understand it, to convey how great it is and why, and maybe convince you that it's worth your cash or your bandwidth, and it occurs to me that I'm unsure why I do it– why I need to do it– and that, in the end, it's because I'm enjoying this and I want you to enjoy it, too.

Pinning Mike Keneally down to any specific genre is useless. After touring with Frank Zappa’s band in 1988 as a guitarist and keyboard player, Keneally eventually began releasing solo albums in 1992. These albums have run the gamut from lo-fi guitar crunch (Boil That Dust Speck) to dark, experimental instrumentals (Nonkertompf) to orchestral (The Universe Will Provide, recorded with Holland’s Metropole Orkest), to acoustic folk (Wooden Smoke), to low-key singer-songwriter power-pop (Wing Beat Fantastic, a collaboration with XTC’s Andy Partridge) and pretty much everything in between.
