Flowers, the third creditable installment of Echo and the Bunnymen's second honeymoon period, finds the stylish, duopolistic musical nucleus of Ian McCulloch's vocal somnolence and Will Sergeant's Eastern guitar mystique newly augmented by the work of bassist Alex Gleave, drummer Vinny Jamieson, and keyboard player Ceri James. Subtle psychedelic touches of theremin, organ, and backwards guitar pursue the colorization of a few monochromatic areas but, for the most part, Flowers is less the work of a new broom and more the affirmation of the Bunnymen's vintage vibe. Therefore, the opening "King of Kings" (think the Doors' "When the Music's Over") wouldn't sound out of sorts on Ocean Rain, while the pronounced garage pop of "Make Me Shine" and "Life Goes On" both build on past endeavors with a newly insistent, radiant vitality. The album's centerpiece–the careworn, love-scarred lamentation of the title track–exudes hard-earned maturity. And maturity is beginning to suit Echo and the Bunnymen very well indeed. –Kevin Maidment (amazon.com)

Blues, Rock & Roll, Soul, Rhythm & Blues | WEB FLAC (tracks) & front cover | 240 MB
Label: Bloodshot | Tracks: 12 | Time: 33:38 min

From a far out moon beyond the rings of Saturn to a dingy studio in Cincinnati, Barrence Whitfield and the Savages' new platter embraces a cosmic and groovy unification. It's a wild, electric phantasmagoria of blues, rock, garage, and soul; it blasts off into diverse orbits only to come back together into a singular Savage cosmology. Soul Flowers of Titan is about people shooting guns, separating, coming home (someday), falling in love, running around, leaving this earth, going crazy, drinking coffee, and thinking about Sun Ra.

In 1967 and 1968, Hearts and Flowers stood at the intersection between folk, country, and rock. The band recorded two albums, Now Is the Time for Hearts and Flowers in 1967 and Of Horses, Kids and Forgotten Women in 1968, and then disappeared. The Complete Hearts and Flowers collects both of these albums and enough extras (13 songs) for another album.

Paul McCartney must not only have been conscious of his slipping commercial fortunes, he must have realized that his records hadn't been treated seriously for years, so he decided to make a full-fledged comeback effort with Flowers in the Dirt. His most significant move was to write a series of songs with Elvis Costello, some of which appeared on Costello's own Spike and many of which surfaced here…
