John Williams composed The Five Sacred Trees for Judith LeClair, the principal bassoonist of the New York Philharmonic in 1995, to honor the orchestra's 150th anniversary. The first performance was given by LeClair and the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur on April 12 of that year. The orchestra consists of three flutes and piccolo, two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, two bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones and tuba, timpani, harp, piano, celesta, and strings. Performance time is approximately 26 minutes. Inspiration for the work also comes from the writings of British poet and novelist Robert Graves.

Classical | WEB FLAC (tracks) & d. booklet | 57:12 min | 341 MB
Label: CPO | Tracks: 14 | Rls.date: 2016

This release completes CPO's complete recordings of Max Reger's violin oeuvre. This extensive oeuvre includes all of Reger's compositional periods, from Op. 1 to his last, unfinished Op. 147. Op. 42 revealed itself as a supreme challenge for violinist Ulf Wallin, both technically and musicially. Wallin quickly realized why Reger, is with no doubt, a master of chromatic polyphony. Reger obviously took cues from J.S. Bach in his compositions as well as lyrical and harmonic design from Brahms and Liszt.

Not only were The Liverpool Five one of the most commercially unsuccessful of those that made up the British Invasion, they weren’t even from Liverpool! Lead vocalist Steve Laine (who had earlier led The Steve Laine Combo), drummer/vocalist Jimmy May, guitarist/vocalist Ken Cox, and keyboardist/vocalist and sometimes sax player Ron Henley, all hailed from London, while bassist/vocalist Dave Burgess came from the county of Cumbria in the extreme northwest. But because of The Beatles, “Liverpool” simply sounded cooler.
