Celtic balladeer John McDermott was born in Scotland, but following his family's relocation to Canada in the mid-'60s, he went on to hone his crystalline tenor at Toronto's St. Michael's Choir School. After graduating he accepted the position of circulation manager with a Toronto newspaper; discovered while singing at a private party, McDermott was befriended by publishing magnate Conrad Black, who funded the sessions that led to the release of the singer's smash 1992 debut, Danny Boy, a record originally intended as a gift for his parents' golden wedding anniversary. Old Friends followed in 1994, and a year later McDermott issued Christmas Memories; with 1996's Love Is a Voyage, he even earned a Canadian Juno Award nomination as Male Vocalist of the Year.

This is Bruce Lipton's amazing video lecture where this cellular biologist presents his breakthrough research which he later developed into a concise explanation on how exactly we humans learn and interact with each other and that the environment (parents) have a much greater influence on a developing child than its genes.

The Spinners story begins in Detroit, hence how for UK audiences from 1967 they became originally known here as The Detroit Spinners. It was important they were not confused with the Liverpool folk group of the same name. Ultimately this was relaxed and on these reissues it should be clear we present the American vocal group we know best for It's A Shame, I'll Be Around and Could It Be I'm Falling In Love. The Spinners adopted many musical styles across the decades from 60s Motown then 70's Philly before arriving in the 80's with Michael Zager's "I Just Want To Be With You" on "Love Trippin'" (1980) and the two albums presented here from 1981. Labor Of Love engaged further with Michael Zager, Can't Shake The Feelin' a collaboration with James Mtume & Reggie Lucas from the period they were delivery success for Phyllis Hyman and Stephanie Mills. Terrific music here from a golden era of soul music by one of the genre's most iconic groups.

Dorothy (Ashanti), an aspiring singer living in a Kansas trailer park and working in a greasy diner for her Aunt Em (Queen Latifah) and Uncle Henry (David Alan Grier), is whisked away by a tornado to the land of Oz together with her pet prawn, Toto (Pepe the Prawn). There, she resolves to ask the Wizard of Oz (Jeffrey Tambor), who resides in the Emerald City, to make her famous. On her subsequent journey, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow (Kermit the Frog), the Tin Thing (Gonzo), and the Cowardly Lion (Fozzie Bear), who all decide to accompany her. The Wizard, however, refuses to help Dorothy unless she first brings him the magical all-seeing eye possessed by the Wicked Witch of the West (Miss Piggy).

A poor boy bccomes friends with a rich girl. He has a pigeon which he sells, but since it is a homing pigeon, he can actually sell it over and over agian. The bird becomes the symbol of his friendship for the girl as well, but in the end she has her brother shoot and kill it. This directorial debut of Oshima Nagisa immediately established the young filmmaker as the leader of the Japanese New Chinema in the sixties. The unsentimental and harshrealistic style was vastly different from the melodramatic traditional of Shochiku Company, the studio who financed the film, at the time. Oshima suggesteed that there no compromise between the rich and the poor and class distinctions are closely linked to criminal tendencies.

Mature and touching music, very much in the jazz tradition, with an "all-star" band assembled by master bassist Marc Johnson. Old friends Joe Lovano, John Scofield and Joey Baron all play beautifully, as does Brazilian pianist Eliane Elias, making her ECM debut. Guitar great John Scofield is featured sparingly, but highly effectively, Johnson making good use of the guitarist's creative rapport with Lovano. Organist Alain Mallet plays on two tracks (8 & 10) only. Material, mostly written by Johnson and/or Elias, consists primarily of sumptuous ballads and gorgeous medium tempo pieces.
