Many musicians lived and were musically active during multiple jazz periods, and some of them actually made significant contributions during all of the periods during which they recorded. But few can claim, as Miles Davis could, to have actually helped design the architecture in every case. Bebop, cool, and fusion all have Davis' handprints deep in the cement of their foundations, and this disc documents some of his best work during the second of those periods. In the mid-'50s he started what would be a tumultuous musical relationship with John Coltrane, and what would eventually become one of the greatest combos in jazz history began to coalesce: alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones in addition to Davis and Coltrane.

The greatest white female rock singer of the 1960s, Janis Joplin was also a great blues singer, making her material her own with her wailing, raspy, supercharged emotional delivery. First rising to stardom as the frontwoman for San Francisco psychedelic band Big Brother & the Holding Company, she left the group in the late '60s for a brief and uneven (though commercially successful) career as a solo artist. Although she wasn't always supplied with the best material or most sympathetic musicians, her best recordings, with both Big Brother and on her own, are some of the most exciting performances of her era. She also did much to redefine the role of women in rock with her assertive, sexually forthright persona and raunchy, electrifying on-stage presence.

PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED APRIL 9TH 1970, FILLMORE WEST RECORDING One of the most influential and innovative musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, together with his musical groups, at the forefront of many major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. In 2006, Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the only jazz musician to date to have warranted entry, which recognized him as 'one of the key figures in the history of jazz' Throughout 1969, Davis' touring band included Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette; as the group never completed a studio recording, it has been subsequently characterized as the lost quintet by many critics.

The Broadcast Archive is a three CD set of radio broadcasts – semi-professional bootlegs in other words. Two of the albums have actually been out (on this label!) since 2015, one is new for 2017 and the whole have been repackaged into a single box set. The Byrds isn’t an exactly honest representation of the box, as Electric Ladyland 1991 is a Roger McGuinn concert. This isn’t such a problem since it’s by far the best CD in the set – the sound is pretty good quality and amongst several Byrds songs there are plenty from his last big studio album Back From Rio. It’s good to hear McGuinn with a full band – the trees are all gone boils with eco-concern, King of the Hill is a jangly tale of rock star drug abuse, Eight Miles High is a fine set closer.

CD Set Of Stray Cats' Finest Live Performances. Without doubt the finest rockabilly band to emerge out of the early 1980s revival, New York's Stray Cats were also among the most stylish, genuine and musically adept groups to have arrived during a period best known for its synth-laden sub-disco tedium. This superb collection features three CDs, each featuring live broadcast recordings from the Cats, taken from different eras of their existence. Kicking off with a dynamic show from Massey Hall in Toronto in 1983, shortly before the group's third studio album Rant & Rave was released, this is followed on disc two by a fine collection of the guys' television appearances recorded between 1981 and 1990. The set concludes on disc three with a later period gig from 1992: the group's legendary show from Asbury Park in New Jersey. With magnificent audio quality throughout and some of the best setlists Stray Cats ever performed, this live collection is destined to become a must-have addition to every fan's collection.
