Curtis Ousley, who performed under the stage name King Curtis, was an American saxophone virtuoso known for rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, blues, funk and soul jazz. Curtis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 6, 2000. On Everybody’s Talking, King Curtis is joined by Bernard Purdie, Billy Butler, Cornell Dupree, Billy Preston and the Memphis Horns. This funky effort is highlighted by the hits “If I Were A Carpenter,” “Groove Me” and “Ridin' Thumb.” Everybody’s Talking was one of Billboard’s Top R&B Albums. This is soul-jazz at its best.

The great British jazz singer Norma Winstone once again casts her net wide for source material for this third ECM album with Italian pianist Glauco Venier and German clarinetist / saxophonist Klaus Gesing. Alongside new pieces by Winstone/Gesing and by Venier, the trio covers tunes by singer-songwriters Nick Drake, Fred Neil and Tom Waits. They take a fresh approach to Madonna’s “Live To Tell”, and to Dave Grusin’s “It Might Be You”, as well as Ralph Towner’s “A Breath Away” (now with lyrics by Norma) and “Bein’ Green”, a children’s song elevated to jazz standard status by Sinatra, Stan Kenton, Ray Charles and many more. “As Winstone moves ever farther from the Great American Songbook,” All About Jazz observed, “it's certain that, with band mates as sympathetic as Gesing and Venier, there's precious little she can't do”.

David Johansen is a true musical chameleon. Whether fronting the influential punk band the New York Dolls, lounging it up as Buster Poindexter or invoking the blues with the Harry Smiths, he has always demonstrated his unique talent for taking a musical style and making it his own. On David Johansen and the Harry Smiths, David and his first-rate band summon the spirit of the blues through American musicologist/folklorist Harry Smith. Featuring gripping performances of songs by Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt and Bob Dylan, this 96-kHz/24-bit recording sounds so real you'll think you're in the Delta.

Poco’s biggest-selling album of all time also presented the biggest personnel change at one time for the then-decade-old group, whose lineup had hardly been a model of stability up to that time. Co-founding drummer/singer George Grantham and longtime bassist/singer Timothy B. Schmit were both gone, the latter off to the Eagles. Listening to parts of this album, one gets the sense that, with the arrival of Charlie Harrison (bass, harmony vocals) and Steve Chapman (drums) in the group, Poco was deliberately adopting a change in sound similar to what the Eagles went through when Joe Walsh joined, into much harder rocking territory, at least part of the time.

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music
“Aqualung” isn’t only a great album, it’s somehow a feel of live from the early 70’s. Maybe not as ambitious and essential in progressive rock terms as “Thick As A Brick”, but in terms of folk prog an absolute masterpiece concept record, too. I always feel like I am travelling back in the 70’s when I listen to classic tracks like “Locomotive Breath”, “Cross-Eyed Mary”, “Mother Gose” or the title track.

This album was the first to be released showcasing Miles Davis and his new quintet (John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums). However it was not the first that Davis recorded with this quintet: before Davis could leave Prestige for his new record label, Columbia, he had to fulfill the remainder of his contract.

Dig Me Out is friendlier, more intimate, but isn't any less passionate.
