"Highway To Hell", AC/DC's fifth (international) album and their last to feature their late vocalist Bon Scott, is arguably the best of the Bon Scott era and certainly the most commercially successful. It is also my personal favourite of all of the albums they made with Bon and the first of three consecutive works they recorded with legendary producer, Robert John "Mutt" Lange. I think it's fair to say that, sonically, they had never sounded better on record before this point, as Lange gave them a punch that they hadn't quite managed to capture in the studio prior to this record. Having said that, the compositions are very similar to those from all of their previous releases, so it is a case of "more of the same" from the band… not that that is a bad thing, if you like AC/DC.

The essence of a great rock n roll band is the ability to drive a beat at breakneck pace, shatter the ear drums and create a sound that makes you think like every other act around is a copy of that particualr band…or simply put,the essence is to sound like AC/DC,pure and simple. This is one of the truely great rock albums of all time, and after 20 years it sounds as fresh today as ever.

AC/DC had been in existence for six years and had released as many albums when they recorded this rollicking show at Towson State College, near Baltimore, Maryland. The band was in its prime, with vocalist Bon Scott leading the group through what would later be viewed as some of their strongest material, with the Young Brothers (Angus and Malcolm) driving the guitar-boogie riffs at full throttle. The band had just released Highway To Hell, the album that would break the entertaining Aussie band worldwide, and was burning up the rock radio charts with a platter of classics that included "Girl's Got Rhythm," "Touch Too Much," and the title track.

Oddly, the legend of Bon Scott never haunted AC/DC. They grieved, certainly, but they were able to move on, releasing Back in Black as a tribute in 1980. The record became their biggest hit and helped them become one of the biggest rock & roll bands in the world. By the late '90s, the group remained popular, and a strange phenomenon had happened – there were generations of AC/DC fans who came of age after Scott's death, and had only a passing familiarity with the rocker…

Genre: Music Video, Concert

Filmed with Panavision cameras and lenses on 35mm film with 26 cameras, including one helicopter, AC/DC: Live at Donington is presented in high definition 1080p on this Blu-ray Disc release in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio. For this release, Sony-BMG and Columbia Music Video have provided three listening options: 48kHz/24bit PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 (640 kbps) and PCM 5.1 48kHz/24bit. Because of the use of so many cameras from various distances and the differing levels of lighting throughout the performance the quality of the picture does vary, often times from one shot to the next, but this has more to do with the things I've mentioned than with the encoding. For example, in certain darker shots from more distant cameras, there is a higher level of grain present than in well-lit shots from cameras closer to or actually on the stage where little to no grain can be seen at all.
