Recording 'The Well-tempered Clavier' is a bit like climbing Everest, and this new recording by Christophe Rousset devoted to Book I has been eagerly awaited. With modesty and rigour, he gives a rich, varied interpretation of this monument to Art, revealing its secrets to us in a highly informative introductory text. Performed on the magnificent Rückers harpsichord at the Château of Versailles, Nicolas Bartholomée's recording ideally reproduces the full, fruity savour of this instrument that has miraculously been preserved.

Thomas Tomkins may be the least known of the composers recorded here, but we unique insights to the Worcester composer, as his autograph manuscripts have been preserved in his own hand, in particular Re.1122 in the Bibiothèque National in Paris. This recording takes Tomkins advice to a copyist, or ‘lessons of worthe’, and applies it to a recital programme: “placed in their owne native keyes: not mingling or mangling them together wth others of contrary keys: But put in theyr Right places.”

For Victor Julien-Laferrière, the Centre for Fine Arts is synonymous with celebration! On the 3rd of June, the young French cellist won first prize at the very first Queen Elizabeth Competition for cello. He wowed the jury with his technique, which demonstrated staggering precision, accuracy and subjectivity, both during the prescribed work and in Shostakovich's First Concerto. The young award winner is back at BOZAR, this time in the company of Jonas Vitaud, a pianist lauded by the BBC Music Magazine for the "beauty of his phrasing".
