Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues performed by Tatiana Nikolayeva. Shostakovich came up with an idea of a polyphonic cycle in 1950 after he took part in the events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death in Leipzig. As a jury member of the International Piano Competition for the best performance of Bach’s music, Shostakovich was a witness of an unconditional triumph of the young Soviet pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva who won the first prize. Upon finishing the new opus in a surprisingly short period of time (October 1950 to February 1951), Shostakovich dedicated it to Nikolayeva who performed it for the first time in 1952 in Leningrad. Since then the 24 Preludes and Fugues have been played by many pianists, but Tatiana Nikolayeva’s interpretation is still considered a model one. Tatiana Nikolayeva made this recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues in 1987.

Dmitri Shostakovich remains the most admired of all Soviet composers, and while he is best known for his more popular symphonic works, he composed a substantial body of music for the piano, including the 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op.87. Modeled on the form used in Bach's Das Wohltempierte Clavier and written in two books of twelve preludes and fugues each, the work was slammed by Soviet music bureaucrats as "formalist" music that aped the works of a religious composer; the work was nevertheless published and premiered by Tatiana Nikolayeva, to whom the work is dedicated. It can be said, with advised caution, that Jenny Lin's approach topples the hegemony of Nikolayeva's recordings. Lin has no compunctions about drawing the modernism, quirkiness, individuality and pianistic color in these works – and nevertheless projects each prelude-and-fugue pairing as a satisfying whole.

Keith Jarrett - Dmitri Shostakovich. 24 Preludes and Fugues Op. 87 (1992) [2CD] {ECM New Series 1469~70}

Dmitri Shostakovich's epic series of preludes and fugues for solo piano was inspired by the very composer whom you would immediately suspect – Johann Sebastian Bach. Indeed, the Russian composer was motivated to write this huge work after a visit to Bach's home city Leipzig in 1950; and, in fact, it resurrects the premise behind Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," providing one prelude and fugue for every major and minor key. So having conquered the Bach work on recordings, Keith Jarrett decided to tackle its 20th century sequel in this two-CD set. Looking at it from one angle, this is Jarrett's most impressive technical achievement in the classical repertoire so far. Generally speaking, the Shostakovich is more difficult to play than the other classical works that he had recorded previously, and he is clearly up to all of its sometimes fearsome demands.

Some DVDs are self-recommending; i.e., they offer definitive performances by great artists. That’s the case in this 1992 BBC-derived production of Tatiana Nikolayeva playing Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, a work she inspired and which the composer dedicated to her. They met in 1950; Nikolayeva a contestant in a Bach Piano competition, Shostakovich on the jury. Her playing of Bach’s music decided the composer to write his own set of Preludes and Fugues, after the master’s great work. She was only 26 at the time and in 1992, we see a grandmotherly figure, pudgy, hair in a bun, but also a musician/pianist of the highest order playing a work she knew intimately and recorded often. Furthermore, it’s a work that arguably is the greatest solo piano work of the 20th century, a work in which Shostakovich laid bare his soul, writing some of his most intimate and moving music…
