Raven presents on a great value Double CD, three original, innovative albums by the highly regarded group WALL OF VOODOO: Seven Days in Sammystown (I.R.S., 1985), Happy Planet (I.R.S. 1987) and The Ugly Americans in Australia (I.R.S., 1988). These unique albums have been long unavailable and are ripe for re-evaluation. Wall of Voodoo emerged from the late 1970s Los Angeles alternative scene with a unique blend of machine-age junk music and off-kilter pop-rock. Like Devo, Wall of Voodoo’s sound was always challenging and entertaining or as once described, “like classy Halloween music, scary but pleasantly so”. Featuring Stan Ridgway as front man, the group made a big splash with clattering, expressive pop songs such as ‘Back in Flesh’, ‘Call of the West’ and the unlikely hit single ‘Mexican Radio’. There was great intelligence at work and a bite to the music that continued when Ridgway left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Andy Prieboy. Third album Seven Days in Sammystown yielded the hit single ‘Far Side of Crazy’ while the fourth Happy Planet boasted a demented re-working of the old Beach Boys fave ‘Do It Again’.

"Love All The Hurt Away" is the thirtieth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin, the singer's second release for Arista Records. Despite strong reviews, it was a sales disappointment, topping off below 250,000 copies. Aretha's cover version of Sam & Dave's classic hit "Hold On! I'm Coming" won Franklin her 11th Grammy Award in the Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female category. It was her first Grammy win since 1974. The album was remastered in 2012 by Big Break Records and included 3 bonus tracks.

Willie Bobo's only LP for Blue Note came at a point well past the label's heyday, when crossover was its primary focus. Hence Tomorrow Is Here has a pronounced '70s R&B/funk feel, with synthesizers, envelope followers, electric pianos, guitars and occasional strings interwoven with Bobo's steady Latin congas, timbales and self-effacing vocals. But there are a few gems to be found here - one in particular. The leadoff track "Suitcase Full Of Dreams" is a great, haunting, Latin-accented song about a journeyman musician's life on the road that should have become a standard but is now almost completely forgotten. Karma's Reggie Andrews sits in on keyboards to give the record its contemporary sound; the other participants are L.A. sessionmen. Bobo's engaging personality, the injected Latin element, and "Suitcase" are what makes this otherwise dated record come alive.
Neu! - Neu! '75 (1975) Japanese Mini-LP, Remastered 2001, Reissue 2012 [Re-Up]

After a three-year break, Neu! members Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother buried their differences temporarily, and reunited for another go at the "motorik" sound they had developed with their debut in 1971. The strange tension and presentation of Neu! 2 and the emergence of their former band Kraftwerk may have precipitated the reunion, but, whatever the reason, the end result proved worth the time, effort, and bickering it took to crank this one out. One thing that is noticeably different on 75 is the presence of synthesizers and the preference of them, it seems, over Rother's guitar. "Isi," which opens the album, features Dinger's metronymic percussion holding down the 2/4 rhythm and a trademark one-note bassline provided by a piano, but the gorgeous sonic washes and flourishes normally handled by Rother's guitar-slinging hands are now painted with a synth. "Seeland" offers a return to the six strings with what would in subsequent years become Rother's ornate "singing" style of playing. Dinger's rhythmic patterns here are deceptively simple. They create a long, trudging 4/4, syncopated every other line, and punctuated by a small ride cymbal at the end of each phrase as Rother's guitar provides both cascading single string notes and a shifting, pulsing bassline. It's a beautiful wasteland, this track; sparse yet full of melodic interplay and layered guitars and keyboards.

"Madam Butterfly" is the seventh album by American soul/R&B group Tavares, produced by Bobby Martin and released in 1979 on the Capitol label. By this stage in the group's career, they had become known as a disco act due to successful singles such as "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel", "Whodunit" and "More Than a Woman." However, Madam Butterfly is noted for its lack of anything approaching disco material, and, as such, is considered to be more akin in style to the group's 1973-'75 albums than to their '76-'78 Freddie Perren-produced output.
