The album was released in 1956 and consists of twelve flawless tracks. The album’s first and last songs, “Jericho” and “99 ½ Won’t Do,” are traditional tunes, and everything else, with the exception of Hanighen’s “Two Little Fishes, Five Loaves of Bread,” was written by Tharpe. The woman is a powerhouse of talent. Her vocals seem to anticipate artists like Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday, and sadly, her guitar playing ability seems to always be underappreciated. She is the only woman that I’ve seen play an electric guitar back in the 40s and 50s. She probably wasn’t the only one, but she was the most famous and certainly the most talented.

Whilst Ida Sand's second ACT album "True Love" was to some extent a family affair - an homage to her husband Ola Gustafsson and new born daughter - her third ACT album "The Gospel Truth", signals a return to her roots and a unique combination of European and American soul. Released two years after "True Love", "The Gospel Truth: presents the Swedish Jazz singer following on musically from her 2007 ACT debut, Meet Me Around Midnight", which captivated listeners with a sound which was "distinctively earthy, soaked with the blood of the blues, saturated by gospel, weathered by jazz and infected by soul".

When Lucas Schmid, producer of the WDR Big Band, first mentioned his interest in a program of music from the Christmas Oratorio of J.S. Bach, arranged to feature this ensemble in combination with the King’s Singers, I was immediately interested and excited. Having collaborated several times with this group of uniquely gifted vocalists, including the WDR Big Band’s Bach 2000 project, I knew there was an opportunity to create something very special indeed. Bach composed the work between 1734 and 1735. Since each of the six cantatas that make up the Christmas Oratorio was originally intended for a particular Sunday in the liturgical year, the sheer quantity of music is far too much for a single performance. The first major part of my work, then, would be the musical selection.

The Genius Sings the Blues began as a simple compilation. Comprised of a dozen songs Ray Charles made between 1952 and 1960, the collection was released in 1961 by Atlantic Records to counter the singer’s migration to rival ABC Paramount. What Atlantic originally underestimated is that the album contained many of Charles’ greatest works, all unified by their bluesy emotions and stirring arrangements. A classic of the soul and R&B canon, The Genius Sings the Blues is a snapshot of the evolution of timeless American music captured by the pianist’s indelible rhythmic pace, gospel roots, jazz backgrounds, and Southern-styled accents…
