One of the most brilliant of the modern mainstream jazz pianists to emerge since the mid-'60s, Monty Alexander is in top form throughout this 2005 live set. Other than hints of reggae on "Runnin' Away," this is very much a straight-ahead set. While Oscar Peterson is clearly an inspiration, Alexander has long had his own approach, whether digging into "The Work Song," expressing honest emotion on "My Mother's Eyes," or romping on "Happylypso/Funji Mama."

Many heavy metal fans will agree that Quiet Riot's peak occurred during 1983 and 1984, when the quartet's mugs were constantly plastered all over MTV, and Metal Health and Condition Critical were two of the genre's top sellers. As a result, it seemed inevitable that a "rarities" set that focused specifically on those years would emerge, and in 2005 Live and Rare, Vol. 1 appeared. On the one hand, there's no denying the party atmosphere the band cooks up on such live tracks as "Let's Get Crazy" and "Metal Health" – you can easily imagine an arena filled with finger-less glove/headband wearing, mullet-sporting headbangers whooping it up…

This is the first CD that Ingrid Fliter recorded professionally and was for a time available from VAI [maybe still is]. Her career didn't take flight until she was awarded the Gilmore Prize in 2006 but way before then, in 2000, she had already taken a 2nd Prize at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw against Yundi Li, who won. She was the only competitor to play Chopin's 2nd Piano Concerto, while all the other finalists played the first. I heard this broken up broadcast over a dial-up modem at my workplace in Buenos Aires, the only possible way for me to hear it at the time. I knew back then that she was a great pianist, that the hard work and endless practice hours had to catch the upward wind for her to become a household name. It is an honor to know her and proud to call her a fellow-Argentine.
