Phil Woods is right at home during these 2002 sessions at Red Rock Recording Studio near his home in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania. With his regular group (Bill Charlap, Steve Gilmore, and Bill Goodwin) minus trumpeter Brian Lynch, Woods adds strings conducted by his old friend Eric Doney on this collection of ballads. "And When We're Young" is the alto saxophonist's tribute to the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated around the time it was written. The leader's lush alto gives way to a brisk Latin-flavored passage featuring powerful solos by violinist Andy Stein and Charlap on piano, while Woods humorously detours into "Nature Boy" upon his return. The strings introduce a lively arrangement of "It Never Entered My Mind," and another favorite of the alto saxophonist, "If I Should Lose You." Unlike many jazz recordings with strings, they complement rather than overwhelm the musicians. But it is almost impossible for a Phil Woods-led date to turn out less than excellent.

It's a grand gathering of the Lords of the Lower Frequencies: bassists Marcus Miller, Victor Bailey, Victor Wooten, Jimmy Haslip, Christian McBride, Gerald Veasley, and Richard Bona are united under a groove to celebrate their hero, Jaco Pastorius. Jaco's homeboy Peter Graves (who employed the bassist in his south Florida big band before he hit it big with Weather Report in 1975) was the mastermind behind this awesome assembly. Under Graves's direction these Jaco gems, mostly from his Weather Report days and his first solo recording, highlight Pastorius' powerful influence.

Yu Ya was born as Lin Lihong on December 18, 1953 in Taipei, Taiwan. She was discovered at the age of 16 singing in a hotel, & her recording career soon took off. She was billed as 1 of the "Five Great Asian Divas" during the 1970s & 1980s, along with Teresa Teng, Judy Ongg , Agnes Chan, & Ouyang Feifei. Her stage name literally means "Especially Elegant". Along with Teresa she went to live in Japan, to pursue her recording career, but unlike Teresa who remained, Yu Ya returned after 2 years to live in Taiwan. She recorded many songs for romantic film makers in the far east (e.g. Hong Kong). She's remained popular in the East, had a long career & may still be performing.

Buffalo Daughter is a three member group consisting of Sugar Yoshinaga, Yumiko Ohno and MoOoG Yamamoto, often augmented by a drummer and other guests. Their sound is heavily influenced by German progressive rock and techno pop, but also includes bits of dub, club, shoe gaze and post-rock influences. Given their mix and match style, and that they emerged in the mid-90s, they are often considered as part of the Shibuya-kei movement.
