These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic. The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity–a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You." The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood.

More than a decade after launching her solo career, vocalist Monica Mancini is finally getting to do the album she's always wanted to. "This is my music", says Monica of I've Loved These Days, a gorgeously crafted collection of songs by artists who helped shape the soundtrack of her formative years, including Lennon & McCartney, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Harry Nilsson, Brian Wilson and Janis Ian. "This is the music that resonates more than anything else for me," she explains. "I love singing standards, and there is something that I respond to with all those wonderful old songs, but these songs are vital to me. These are my standards." Intriguingly, I've Loved These Days goes a step beyond mere reverence by actually incorporating many of Monica's musical heroes. Joining Monica on I've Loved These Days are original composers Jackson Browne offering guitar and vocal accompaniment on "These Days," Brian Wilson and the multi-Grammy winning vocal group Take 6 contributing vocals and arranging on "God Only Knows," Stevie Wonder harmonically dueting on "Blame It on the Sun," and the Rascals' Felix Cavaliere providing B-3 organ accompaniment on his classic "How Can I Be Sure." Says Monica, "It was thrilling that these guys came back to reconnect and rework songs that helped put them on the map as artists.

Detroit was and still is a hotbed of American music. The city is known for producing some of music's greatest artists including Diana Ross and Jackie Wilson, to name but two. The label you'd most associate with Detroit? Motown, of course. One you might not is Anna Records but you should. The Detroit-based label was a precursor to Motown and was born of the same stock.

…And Herreweghe himself is actually an apt interpreter of the work. Not only does he have a knack for bringing out better than the best in his performers, but he actually seems to believe in the spiritual and sublime essence of the work, a very, very rare quality in any conductor these days…

Although the material on ' initial outing may seem somewhat routine these days, it's actually quite notable considering it preceded the actual fruition of disco. The perennial alone would make this a classic, but the quality is far from limited to that track. Earthy dance gems like and are a nice cross between the late-'60s sound of Detroit soul and late-'70s dancefloor soul. Meanwhile, the mellow and show a calmer side, while still keeping the groove alive.
