In 1984, a 45-year-old Tina Turner made one of the most amazing comebacks in the history of American popular music. A few years earlier, it was hard to imagine the veteran soul/rock belter reinventing herself and returning to the top of the pop charts, but she did exactly that with the outstanding Private Dancer. And Turner did so without sacrificing her musical integrity. To be sure, this pop/rock/R&B pearl is decidedly slicker than such raw, earthy, hard-edged Ike & Tina classics as "Proud Mary," "Sexy Ida," and "I Wanna Take You Higher." But she still has a tough, throaty, passionate delivery that serves her beautifully on everything from the melancholy…

And here you can read an interview with Martyn Ware, songwriter, producer and musician of the Private Dancer album. The interview is from the 29th of May 2014, 30 years after the first release of the Private Dancer Album. The record became an enormous success for the singer (then in her mid-forties) thanks in part to an 18-month single release schedule that saw no fewer than seven songs from the ten-track album issued as 45s, in various territories. The first of those singles was a cover of the Al Green classic Let’s Stay Together which, when issued in November 1983, penetrated the UK top ten and became her first top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since the iconic Nutbush City Limits performed with ex-husband Ike ten years earlier. That single was produced by Martyn Ware (with Greg Walsh), from Heaven 17 and he spoke to SuperDeluxeEdition recently to share his memories of working with Tina.

South Florida guitarist Randy Bernsen started his recording career in an unorthodox way, calling a collection of jazz/fusion luminaries who, even to his surprise, agreed to be a part of his 1986 debut album Music for People, Planets & Washing Machines. After recruiting fretless bass giant and fellow South Florida resident Jaco Pastorius and getting a return call of interest from keyboard virtuoso Herbie Hancock, it was easier to interest keyboardist Bob James and drummer Peter Erskine. Released on MCA's Zebra label, the album earned Bernsen write-ups in Down Beat and Guitar Player magazines and appeared to start a flourishing career.

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy…
