Ray McMichael is a struggling writer/director trying to catch a buzz in Hollywood. In order to spice up his latest script Ray enlists the aid of super-pretentious Weston Craig, master of the hip-cat lingo. Weston quickly proceeds to wipe away any traces of Ray's influence, creating a film filled with pop culture references and inane discussions, basically a film about nothing. Before Ray discovers the truth, the script becomes the buzz of Tinsel Town.

This offbeat mixture of eroticism and dystopian science fiction was directed by French cult figure Jean Rollin. While driving along a lonely road in the middle of the night, a man (Vincent Gardnere) sees Elizabeth (Brigette Lahaie), a beautiful woman, wandering by the side of the road, obviously disoriented and wearing only a flimsy white nightgown. Another woman, Veronique (Dominique Journet), equally dazed and entirely nude, looks on. When Elizabeth collapses, the man takes her back to his home, where she confesses that she has amnesia and isn't sure what's happening to her….

Limited edition of T.S. Monk's 1980 release House Of Music. Livin' the Bon Bon Vie, with this classic uptempo groover. You'd hardly guess that this guy was Thelonious Monk's son, but who cares about his roots when the album grooves so hard? This Monk plays drums, not piano, but the best tracks on the record have a tight keyboard funky soul sound that's virtually a blueprint for 80s groove, lots of jazzy elements that warm things up nicely, and a catchy rhythmic pulse that never quits. The standout cut is the classic Bon Bon Vie, a dance floor groover that will never die, and a huge sample for Public Enemy, but the album also includes many other great cuts.

In this Hungarian drama, the effects of sterility and jealousy on a marriage are played out against a backdrop of World War II and the rising Nazi persecution of Jews. Director Marta Meszaros usually focuses on issues like pregnancy, middle-age, and other topics without questioning the broader picture. In this drama, Sylvia (Lili Monori) cannot have children, and she convinces married Jewish woman Irene (Isabelle Huppert) to have a child and then give the child to her for adoption. The plan works but it also backfires. The way in which the child was adopted causes friction between Sylvia and her husband, and to make matters worse, Sylvia's husband falls in love with Irene. A crisis looms when he asks his jealous wife to give Irene her identity papers because Jews are being deported and Irene will die without their help.

Anna, who lives in the neighborhood, interviews him with a video camera. Martin gives her his card. At the meeting of the tenants’ association, the topic of restructuring is discussed. Anna visits Martin in his office to attain further information. Later, they meet up in a restaurant. Martin is forty-three, Anna is twenty-four. Martin is charmed. The next time that he is unsuccessful in reaching her on the telephone, he sleeps in his car in front of her building. One night, he climbs up on the roof of the neighbor’s house in an adventurous attempt to declare his love for her. And when he sits down at the piano to sing her a love song, she forgets that she is holding a glass of wine. Anna doesn’t object when Jörg (Wolfgang Kinder), her previous boyfriend, painfully fumbles with her apartment door keys as he removes them from his key chain. In an amorous frenzy, they travel to Italy. There, on the beach, Anna tells him that she is pregnant with his child. This takes Martin by surprise. Will this foil his plans for the future? Back in Berlin, they arrive just in time for the tenants’ party held by the Chamisso Square residents. Martin feels out of place there. He discovers his own confidential information about the background of the restructuring on the information circular being distributed by the tenants’ association – and his name appears as well. Martin leaves the scene angry and disappointed and drives away. Anna runs after him, but he keeps driving. She gets in her car and follows him?

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's controversial, fifteen-hour-plus Berlin Alexanderplatz, based on Alfred Döblin's great modernist novel, was the crowning achievement of a prolific director who, at age thirty-four, had already made forty films. Fassbinder’s immersive epic, restored in 2006 and now available on DVD in this country for the first time, follows the hulking, childlike ex-convict Franz Biberkopf (Günter Lamprecht) as he attempts to "become an honest soul" amid the corrosive urban landscape of Weimar-era Germany. With equal parts cynicism and humanity, Fassbinder details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggling to survive in a viciously uncommon time.
