The Rolling Stone 500 was compiled by 172 voters comprised of rock artists and well-known rock music experts, who submitted ranked lists of their favorite 50 Rock & Roll/Pop music songs. The songs were then tallied to create the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Squeezing Out Sparks is a 1979 album by Graham Parker and the Rumour, their fourth official record. It was voted album of the year in the 1979 Village Voice Pazz & Jop Critics Poll and later ranked number 335 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Although the Rumour were not credited on the cover, their name was included on the album label.

Unknown Pleasures is the debut album by the English post-punk band Joy Division. Unknown Pleasures has been highly rated by successive generations of the music press. Rolling Stone described the album as "punk on the edge of Goth, with echoes of disco and the Doors", and placed it number 24 in its list of the "50 Coolest Records". Q magazine placed the album at number 19 in its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums". NME ranked the album at number 4 in its list of "The Greatest Albums of the '70s" and at number 43 in its list of the "Greatest Albums of All Time".

Manifesto is the sixth studio album by Roxy Music, and was released in March 1979 by E.G. in the UK, Polydor in Europe and by Atco Records in the US. Following an almost four-year recording hiatus, Manifesto was Roxy Music's first studio album since 1975's Siren. The first single from Manifesto was "Trash", which barely made the UK top 40. However, the second single, the disco-tinged "Dance Away", returned the band to the top 3, beaten to no.1 for two weeks from 26 May 1979 by Blondie's "Sunday Girl".
