I love the whole symphony but from the second movement two favorite moments, two details, spring to mind. First, the recapitulation when the solo violin takes flight, like a buzzing bee around a flower, and then accidentally finds itself in a wonderful modulation to E major. The second is the ending. The flowers, that move and dance elegantly against the wind, suddenly expose their Tristan-like soul. From the vast first movement I would choose the huge, yawning creature’s (Pan’s?) first appearance.

Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and 24bit remastering. Includes an alternate take of "Blue Train" for the first time in the world. Although never formally signed, an oral agreement between John Coltrane and Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion was indeed honored on Blue Train – Coltrane's only collection of sides as a principal artist for the venerable label. The disc is packed solid with sonic evidence of Coltrane's innate leadership abilities. He not only addresses the tunes at hand, but also simultaneously reinvents himself as a multifaceted interpreter of both hard bop as well as sensitive balladry – touching upon all forms in between.

Rolling Stone magazine has declared soul diva Aretha Franklin as one of music’s greatest singers. Her sixth studio recording for Atlantic Records is an intriguing collection of pop standards delivered with her blistering vocals. This album, full of authoritative singing is on par with her greatest works from the ‘60s and early ‘70s. Franklin covers an array of pop-oriented classics from Sam Cooke’s “Bring It on Home to Me” to Smokey Robinson’s “The Track of My Tears.” Produced by Tom Dowd, the album soared to #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums.

Plenty, Plenty Soul is vibraphonist Milt Jackon's 1957 studio album under Atlantic Records. The record features a nine-piece group that is highlighted by the contributions of the exuberant altoist Cannonball Adderley and tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson. With pianist Horace Silver helping out, these all-star dates still sound fresh and enthusiastic decades later.

Mstislav Rostropovich is the world's greatest cellist, and he has actually made at least five recordings of this greatest of all cello concertos. I have a certain preference for his later version, with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra on Erato. This version has long been a prime recommendation, and in this new remastering at mid-price, it's an even better deal now. Herbert von Karajan accompanies with his usual expertise, and the Tchaikovsky performance is quite simply the finest around. This concerto is one of those pieces of which you'll want to have five or six copies. Just make sure this is one of them. –David Hurwitz

Sometimes you come across a performance that may not be exactly to your taste, but is nonetheless so persuasive of its type that it disarms criticism. This is one. It's not quite a "one to a part" interpretation of the work, but with 10 choristers and eight strings, it is intimate, and that always risks minimizing the majesty that Bach built into the Sanctus, the eight-part Osanna, and the choruses with trumpets and drums.
