12 Girls Band will be familiar to most in the US as the group that was performing Chinese music at the end of the Closing Ceremonies of the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004. The group performs on traditional Chinese instruments, the er-hu, the pipa, the dizi, and the zheng. The members are classically trained musicians who normally perform in traditional Chinese orchestras. Nevertheless, these musicians show their versatility and liveliness through their performance in the 12 Girls Band. Their fresh sounds comes from an updating of traditional Chinese music with a contemporary music sound and rhythm. Not only are they able to thus make Chinese music more accessible (and listenable) to Western ears, they also perform Western music (both symphonic and popular, including the jazz great Paul Desmond's Take Five) through a Chinese music prism. 12 Girls Band is tremendously popular in China.

12 Girls Band began as a series of auditions held throughout China, seeking thirteen attractive and versatile young female instrumentalists (although only twelve appear onstage at any time). After taking Japan by storm, their debut US release, Eastern Energy (2004), created a sensation, crowning Billboard's World Music chart. Since then, the group has become a firm favorite at PBS and NPR, with several prestigious international concert bookings on the horizon. For the present recording, the ensemble ranges between local folk songs, newly composed tunes and works by Sting ("Fragile"), J.S. Bach (an excerpt from Concerto For Violin in A Minor), G. Puccini ("Nessun Dorma" from Turandot), and James Horner ("My Heart Will Go On," the love theme from Titanic).

It's difficult doing an unbiased review of this work. The music is, at the least, interesting, and sometimes quite marvelous. The ladies are undeniably fetching, and the settings are entrancing. The general effect is wonderful. The ladies, all conservatory trained, play traditional Chinese instruments with some background dubbing. The selections are melodious, lilting, and sometimes very moving. Along with Chinese music, they do Paul Desmond's hit from the sixties, Take Five; it is not pure jazz, by any means, but it's interesting. They also do a Russian folk tune which was popular in this country as an expression of support for the Soviet people: Meadowland.

After hearing EASTERN ENERGY several times I found quite a few aspects to like, while a few areas left a bit to be desired. Yet the latter should be weighted against the fact that this is their debut USA release and as such there's lots of time for them to reach their potential with music of greater artistic impact. I'm not really into new age music, but I do recognize that there is an audience out there that is emotively impacted by this genre. And despite it not being my normal listening fare, I do feel an emotive connection with a fair amount of the material on EASTERN ENERGY.
