The album features five of the UK's most exciting young jazz musicians, in collaboration with U.S. jazz legend, trumpeter Eddie Henderson. Willy Porter's guitar playing is so expressive and such an integral part of his performances that he is perhaps best described as a guitarist-songwriter rather than a mere singer-songwriter. Even when he is backed by a band, as he is on most of tracks, he uses a perfectly placed bent string or subtle rhythmic shift to wordlessly comment on the song, infusing it with an extra layer of meaning. On previous CDs Porter sometimes gave into the urge to overplay, which, when you pick as well as he does, must be hard to resist.

I was lucky enough to find this compilation at a store years ago. Not sure how rare it is or not but its excellent. And was an excellent introduction to Hawkwind for me. I went on to buy several of their other albums because of this one.

With connections borne of years in the industry Clark was able to have his first choice of performer on each instrument resulting in unbeatable interpretations. The guests musicians include Andy Sheppard, Tommy Smith, Tim Garland, Iain Ballamy, Nigel Hitchcock, Guy Barker, Christine Tobin, Gareth Williams, Arnie Somogyi, Laurence Cottle and the Locrian String Quartet.

The quintessential American power pop band, Big Star remains one of the most mythic and influential cult acts in all of rock & roll. Originally led by the singing and songwriting duo of Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the Memphis-based group fused the strongest elements of the British Invasion era – the melodic invention of the Beatles, the whiplash guitars of the Who, and the radiant harmonies of the Byrds – into a ramshackle but poignantly beautiful sound which recaptured the spirit of pop's past even as it pointed the way toward the music's future. Although creative tensions, haphazard distribution, and marketplace indifference conspired to ensure Big Star's brief existence and commercial failure, the group's three studio albums nevertheless remain unqualified classics, and their impact on subsequent generations of indie bands on both sides of the Atlantic is surpassed only by that of the Velvet Underground.

This 3-piece in my mind blew ELP out of its own native waters! Rick Van Der Linden is a criminally underrated keyboard maestro with more than a few good ideas.
