Brendan Benson – a colleague of Jack White who is known for his exceptionally well-crafted power pop records – produces the band and he favors a crackling live feel, emphasizing the Howlin' Brothers' loose, natural chemistry that, in turn, suggests their versatility. Unlike so many bluegrass groups, chops aren't the priority for the Howlin' Brothers – they prefer groove and feel, to bounce ideas off each other and their various guest musicians. This doesn't mean they can't solo – they can and they do often throughout Trouble – but Benson and the band accentuate interplay, which means this is a visceral record, engaging just as music.

Arrivederci Cowboy!
A stranger, called "the Portuguese" rides into a town…
But what if he only finds women there?
The story begins like a classic spaghetti western from the early 70s, and becomes a "No Place for a Man". MONDO SANGUE, the German soundtrack duo, comes up with another homage to the Italian genre cinema. And as the name MONDO SANGUE suggests … it gets bloody.

In a sense, Belinda Carlisle's A Woman & a Man is a companion record to her first solo album. It arrived in 1996, ten years after Belinda, and it also functioned as something of a break from the Go-Go's, as it was her first album after the group's mid-'90s reunion. That's not where the similarities end: the title track has some Motown propulsion, Charlotte Caffey comes in to co-write "Kneel at Your Feet," and instead of Tim, Carlisle covers Neil Finn. All these echoes are somewhat buried underneath the studio gloss created by producer David Tickle, a veneer that can get too thick on the ballads but nevertheless is often pleasingly expensive. This is a big-budget studio album from an era when they were common and, in retrospect, its overblown adult contemporary has its charms…

Gavin Bryars - A Man In A Room, Gambling (1998)  Music

The five variations of the title piece find Bryars returning somewhat to the more overtly experimental, not to say whimsical, aspects of his earliest work. They take the form of brief instructions in the fine art of cardsharping, with musical accompaniment, to be broadcast over radio during unoccupied stretches of airtime.

If Al Kooper isn't a living American musical legend, no one is. Who else has performed with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix and countless others? And not just performed but been an important component of legendary songs (how about the Hammond organ on both Dylans' Like a Rolling Stone and The Stones' You Can't Always Get What You Want)? As a solo artist he is best known for his work as a founding member of both the Blues Project and Blood Sweat and Tears. Many more famous recordings have followed and lead us to this great selection - a CD that is, in my opinion, a classic: a two-CD Al-fest. Recorded live at NYC's Bottom Line, Al performs his great tunes from the Blues Project and Blood Sweat and Tears, as well as his solo recordings such as I Stand Alone. The excitement from the packed audience is only rivaled by the intensity Al and the band bring to such classics as I Can't Quit Her, Somethin' Goin' On and New York City (You're a Woman). It's Blues, Jazz, Rock and Roll and a great time, as only Al Kooper can bring.

Half a Boy/Half a Man is the eleventh studio album by George Thorogood and the Destroyers. It was released on April 13, 1999 on the CMC International label. The album peaked at #24 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. George Thorogood is an American musician, singer and songwriter from Wilmington, Delaware. His "high-energy boogie-blues" sound became a staple of 1980s rock radio, with hits like his original songs "Bad to the Bone" and "I Drink Alone". He has also helped popularize older songs by American icons, such as "Move It on Over", "Who Do You Love?", and "House Rent Boogie/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", which continue to get heavy airplay on classic rock radio…

Gil Scott-Heron's 1971 album Pieces of a Man set a standard for vocal artistry and political awareness that few musicians will ever match. His unique proto-rap vocal style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists, and nowhere is his style more powerful than on the classic "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Even though the media – the very entity attacked in this song – has used, reused, and recontextualized the song and its title so many times, the message is so strong that it has become almost impossible to co-opt. Musically, the track created a formula that modern hip-hop would follow for years to come: bare-bones arrangements featuring pounding basslines and stripped-down drumbeats. Although the song features plenty of outdated references to everything from Spiro Agnew and Jim Webb to The Beverly Hillbillies, the force of Scott-Heron's well-directed anger makes the song timeless. More than just a spoken word poet, Scott-Heron was also a uniquely gifted vocalist. On tracks like the reflective "I Think I'll Call It Morning" and the title track, Scott-Heron's voice is complemented perfectly by the soulful keyboards of Brian Jackson.

Aretha Franklin’s 1967 landmark recording, "I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You" stands among her most celebrated works. Her powerful and passionate vocals helped earn her the title “Queen of Soul.” Produced by Jerry Wexler, the seminal classic debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit singles, “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” and “Respect.” “Respect” would go on to win the GRAMMY® Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best Rhythm & Blues Recording. The monumental recording was also included in the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” A must own recording!

He would be forgotten several decades later, but in the middle '60s Len Chandler was a reasonably well-known socially conscious folk singer/songwriter. Produced by the estimable John Hammond, his Columbia debut was commendably earnest and goodhearted New York 1960s folk.
